Poetry published in Room. It's poetry written by Canadian women and is published quarterly.
Lisa's cover letter appeared on the publication's website as well.
One of the pleasures of volunteering with the Room collective is getting to read fresh new writing. Along with the over 1200 submissions we receive each year, we often also receive great cover letters that show the writer's understanding of—and connection with—the theme for the issue to which they are submitting.
This is a great example of this connection and understanding. Lisa Xing's poetry found a home in Room 36.1, Mythologies of Loss, out in March 2013. Here's an excerpt from Lisa cover letter:
To Room Magazine editors:
…
Your content is very relatable to modern women; it creates a space for us to share our creativity with the public in a compilation of different voices. This is especially important for me, as a Chinese-Canadian woman born in China, but raised in Canada. Although I do consider myself a post-modern feminist in many senses, I feel like my poetry reflects the more vulnerable side of the modern female experience. This edition's theme is one that resounds with me. As I have had 11 different mailing addresses in the last seven years as a result of my career, it's always a struggle living and dealing with loss. Parting with kindred friends I make, cities I've come to love, and even myself in every place I visit. This submission is an account of the ever-transient lifestyle I lead and reflecting upon the loss of identity and relationships that goes along with having to uproot so often.
